Ms. DeNita L. Turner is President of Laurel, Maryland-based Image Builders, Inc. She founded the company in 1994 to offer specialized personal enhancement programs that help clients establish a more positive image. "You sell yourself with your image—use it," Ms Turner is fond of saying. Ms. Turner delivers the "right prescription" to increase the resilience needed to compete in today's ever –changing environment. She works with clients to polish their image and then teaches them how to use it as a tool—personally and professionally. Ms. Turner offers group and one-on-one training programs that focus on "Life Skills" that build trust, confidence and interpersonal effectiveness.

Some of Image Builder's clients include General Electric, Unisys Corp., Lucent Technologies, Marriott International, National Basketball Association, Women's National Basketball Association, Purdue University, University of Connecticut and Howard University. Over the years, Ms. Turner has appeared with clients on NBA Today (ESPN), Inside Stuff (NBC), and in the Toronto Star and the Washington Business Journal.

Ms. Turner started Image Builders after a 20-year career in sales and marketing at Fortune 500 companies, including Marriott International, Inc. and The Coca-Cola Co. At Marriott, she worked in sales and marketing for 12 years, serving as director of Communication and Training for the International Sales and Marketing department, where she was responsible for developing and implementing brand training for lodging in Tokyo, Sydney, London, Frankfurt and Latin America. Prior to that position, she created sales strategies for travel agents, plus government and corporate businesses as a national account manager for Courtyard/Fairfield Inn by Marriott. She took on similar roles at McGraw-Hill and Coca-Cola.

In her corporate career, Ms. Turner discovered again and again that many individuals lack solid personal, social and business skills that were traditionally instilled by family members. In today's busy, stressful society, one of the first things to fall by the wayside at home, she found, is the teaching of etiquette and simple social skills, or "good manners," as she calls it. The concept for Image Builders evolved, and, with a blessing from executives at Marriott, she left corporate America and incorporated her new company. Ms. Turner combined her sales and marketing experience with her passion for teaching, passed on by her parents--both teachers and high school coaches--to create Image Builders. Today, the Maryland company holds workshops both domestic and international arenas for corporate teams, academic groups and professional athletic associations.

A native of Richmond, Va., Ms. Turner is an active member of Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyers Association, National Association of Female Executives and Hampton Roads African American Sports Hall of Fame in Virginia. She serves as a mentor to high school students and enjoys participating in all types of sports, especially golf and speed walking. Ms. Turner's family has played an important role in her professional success, offering unwavering support and inspiration. Her grandmother, especially, has served as a guiding force in Ms. Turner's life, which is evident by the number of times "My grandmother…" is quoted in Image Builder workshops. Not to mention in the kitchen, where Ms. Turner can occasionally be found attempting to duplicate the dreamy taste of her grandmother's sweet potato pie and pound cake.

As Ms. Turner says frequently, " remember to not just survive!"
